Literally and figuratively catfishing customers.
This has been a problem for years. I remember there only really being repercussions if it was catfish after the product was described as “cod and chips”
Biggest strictly speaking catfish is in fact a fish. And fish and chips, traditional or otherwise, isn’t particularly descriptive.
long as it is clear
sometimes I want catfish
mahimahi can be good too
god, now i really want a breaded fried mahi burger
good haiku
Imagine complaining about an objective upgrade in fish quality.
We do need to vary the kinds of fish used, as long as it’s clear what you’re getting.
(Wait, is this where “catfishing” comes from?)
I had a catfish in China. It was delicious.
Catfish is a disgusting bottom feeding trash fish with an awful texture and flavor.
It was full of spices and herbs
We aren’t talking about you
Happy to have catfish, but it really depends on how it’s been handled, farmed or caught. If its not done right, it can taste earthy, almost moldy. A bit like cheap Bass.
Done right though and it’s delicious and more than happy to eat it!
As always, the problem isn’t that they are serving it, but that they are hiding it.
I would happily eat a bean wrap, but you shouldn’t sell it as a steak wrap.
Absolutely yeah. But those encouraging us towards enshittification would prefer we not ask those questions.
Now I’m always going to have a panga of doubt when I go to the chippy
Good on you going for the less endangered fish
I’m from the American South originally, and catfish is our main fry fish since it’s a poor region with a lot of rivers. Honestly, it’s a fantastic fish for frying, but I haven’t had it in a while because demand has now caused catfish to be expensive around here.
My point being, replacing cod with catfish is only going to work for so long. Catfish also tastes like mud if you fuck it up. It sucks they’re cheaping out on a good dish like that, I know I’d be pissed if I was expecting my catfish and got another fish instead. Makes a huge difference.
Similar things happening in supermarkets (or probably have been happening for years). Fish fingers are rarely cod unless they explicitly say they are (and then who knows?). The old frozen battered cod is now in pretty mich the same packaging except just called “battered fish”. If people can’t tell the difference and - nutritionally - there’s little difference, does it matter?
Catfish is garbage fish.
I grew up with fish as a primary protein source and the only fish I never could like was catfish.
