I feel like we blew past banana republic a while back and are onto deciding whether we’re a nation of laws at all anymore. The idea that the US is a democracy is laughable.

How do you people write that without cringing yourself to death? It’s like tweens writing Micro$oft. Waow you really showed em with that original twist in the name

For the record, I hate this place as much as you - if not more.

Elections are not the defining trait of democracies. Technically they are not even a requirement. This is why plenty of autocracies can actually have a ton of elections.

Obviously, he meant free and fair elections, not show ones in dictatorships. Legitimate elections define democracy.

I agree, but again. Elections are not even technically required. There are democratic decision making structures that don’t rely on election of representatives or voting. Specially on direct democracies, it’s but one of the many ways to ensure the prevalence of democratic values.

        Oh, we’ll have elections.

They are just trying to decide how convincing they can get away with making it look like a free and fair election without letting it actually be free and fair.

Putin for example has decided that 88% support is “close enough” to a free and fair election… for now.

I believe all elections in the US going forward will be putin style elections, the rethugs will just issue a decree that the supreme leader won again and this time he going 95% of the votes. All hail king turd
