  • My day so far in Germany: wake up without alarm at 3:30, have coffee and smoke a joint with my husband (it’s his day off), eat cold vegetable Maultaschen (my beloved) for breakfast, walk to my job at the bakery for my 5:00 shift, run around sweating all day until my shift ends at 13:00, walk home, decompress, and eat the rest of the Maultaschen.

In an hour or two, my husband and I will go sit on the riverbank a couple blocks away, smoke a few joints, and he’ll play the banjo (very uncommon here) while I read until we want to have dinner. Then we’ll make open faced sandwiches for dinner (very common here), and try to get to bed by 20-21.

  • Full disclosure: this is a straight up straw man, because I don’t want to pay for the book to find out how they actually expand on this.

Some cultures have produced vital advances; others remain dysfunctional and regressive. All cultures are now equal. Criticism and value judgments are forbidden. Yet this new dogma glosses over the fact that certain cultures and indeed subcultures . . . have produced wonders. Others have proven middling, and worse, regressive and harmful.

I wonder where they’d place various Middle Eastern/North African cultures. By that metric, they’ve created wonders and made uncountable advances for humanity. And yet, I suspect the authors somehow land on European, five eyes parties, India, and East Asian cultures as the most advanced.

  • The headline is not untrue, but I think a lot of people are making school shooting assumptions based on “mass shooting” that would probably be avoidable with a change in phrasing.

One adult man shot his wife and presumed girlfriend, killed seven of their own children, plus an eighth who was visiting, and then booked it. It’s a horrific crime to commit and I can’t understand how a person can do something like that.

  • I mean, yeah, it’s not a big deal if you don’t think about it further. I don’t like knowing that the people who are supposed to be impartial and who might have to intervene in a situation in which I find myself in danger don’t think I’m as valuable as a German citizen is. If the police had faced consequences, I would be a lot less concerned, because as you said, bad things happen everywhere. With no consequences, it means there’s tacit systemic acceptance of that type of behavior and attitude.

As for why a bastard would want to be a cop? You don’t get to witness a man burning alive as a banker.

As I said, it’s better here, but that doesn’t mean it’s fine or good.
