I think you need to speak to a mental health specialist, because AI psychosis can be really destructive. We all have problems, but using chat bots to make us feel better is dangerous for you and those around you, even if it feels good in the moment. These bots are designed to tell you exactly what you want to hear so that you become addicted to them.

I’m going to guess you didn’t accomplish much as a software engineer before AI? The personal deficiencies at the core of that are still there even if you use AI to tell you otherwise. I won’t speculate what those deficiencies are, but I just want you to engage in some honest introspection. I’'ve only ever used sdl 2 and 3, but I’ve encountered 1.2 code in the wild. APIs are going to be different, but big picture stuff is mostly similar. If you learn how to use one version, it shouldn’t be too difficult to switch.

You should start with C before going into C++. This is because C is the simplest possible language that exposes you to pointers and memory management. That’s the most important foundational skill you need in low level languages like this.

You could learn memory management using C++, but there are a lot of distractions, and the modern features designed to make memory management easier may make it harder/confusing for someone starting at the beginning.

My advice: follow a modern tutorial for C and SDL (on your PC, not that N95), and use it to make a simple game or UI with SDL’s drawing API. Actually aim to finish something (even if it sucks) and you’ll learn a lot.

I recently tried playing it again, and I wouldn’t say it’s “trash”. Yes, they completely dropped the ball on the exploration part of their exploration game, but the meat and bones of a Bethesda RPG are still in there. It’s a good time for anyone bored of replaying Skyrim and/or Fallout if you get it on sale.
