And I don’t blame them one bit.

White, straight-presenting, not obviously something other than christian, and are doing a very standard business trip or holiday trip: you’re probably ok.

Anything else and the risk goes up. Even something like taking a trip that starts in Seattle, goes up to Vancouver and then comes back via Canadian flights might be suspicious enough to cause problems.

Probably 99% of the people who go to the World Cup will be fine. Even the ones who are non-white, or are obviously muslim or something. But, I’m positive that with the thousands of people making the trip, there will be tens, maybe hundreds who the Palantir AI and/or racist ICE identify as suspicious, and they will be hit with real trouble.

I have 2 muslim friends who travel to the US at least once a month for business. Obvious visible minorities, obvious muslims.

I cant fathom how they have the confidence to do this but anecdotally, they’ve never had an issue. It’s definitely one of those, high damage, low probability things in terms of risk management.

Brazil has a huge Football (USA Soccer) scene and makes up a large percentage of World Cup tourism. Being dark-skinned Hispanics, they are exactly who ICE targets.

Yep. They’re also typically loud and expressive, not quiet and submissive. So, if they encounter ICE they’re not likely to just play nice and deescalate.

I can’t imagine this World Cup happening without at least a dozen Brazilians disappearing into ICE detention.

A dozen will be an understatement. The tournament games span over a week. I think 100 is a closer figure, if FIFA doesn’t get their wish of ICE going on ‘vacation’.

          tangent on above comment's wording

OFC I fully defend Brazilians or anyone profiled by ICE being “not quiet and submissive”. I just want to clarify that because the wording of your comment made me think of how people of color in social and workplace events are more often branded with negative terms than white male counterparts.

It could be a lot more than 100. There are a lot of Brazilians who aren’t in the US legally, and some of them may try to attend matches. Because of the danger ICE poses, that might be a really dumb decision. But, I think some of them might take a risk because seeing Brazil play is too important to miss. If they go after these guys, they’ll probably also grab a lot of people who are in the US on holiday visas and have done nothing wrong.

As for “not quiet and submissive”, I was trying to find a good way to phrase that. There seems to be something in Brazilian culture that leads to them being really loud and outgoing. If you’re having a party, it’s a great way to get things started. A bunch of Brazilians at a party and it’ll be a loud, exciting party. But, when dealing with the cops, sometimes it’s best to be quiet and not draw any attention. That’s where the typical Brazilian personality is a drawback. Take a dark-skinned Brazilian and have him grow up in Finland, and it’s a different story. Being quiet and not drawing attention to himself will then be a natural personality trait. Maybe not so good at a party (until there’s enough alcohol involved) but great for not drawing attention from authorities.

This is all a generalization, of course. Individual people will be different. But, there’s enough of that kind of Brazilian personality that I think they’re generally in more danger than other groups.
