  • I mean people have tried it and there is no law that forces people to be in a union. But why would anyone go and work for a company that is paying them less?

As for an example of what would happen just look at Tesla in Sweden(which uses a similar system)that has refused to sign a collective agreement and some of their employees have been striking against the company since 2023 which is still going and is the longest strike in Sweden in the last 80 years. After the strike started other unions started so called “sympathy strikes”. The Swedish Transport union joined the strike and refused to load or unload any Tesla cars at ports. The dockworker, electricians and postal worker unions also joined and refused to provide services to Tesla. This affected their deliveries, installation and maintenance of charging stations and so on. Eventually unions from other Nordic countries also joined such as Danish port workers from 3F union then Norwegian port workers from Fellesforbundet and finally Finnish ones from Finnish Transport worker Union. Pension Danmark, one of the largest pension funds in Denmark to divest entirely from Tesla. They now have to transport their cars by land since port workers refuse to unload them and they can’t even get license plates for their cars because of the postal union strike.

  • That’s what you get when unions aren’t a major player in your country.

In Denmark for example the government doesn’t even pass laws for stuff like minimum wage or working conditions. Everything is based on collective agreements between unions and employer associations. That’s how Denmark has pretty high minimum wage, 5 weeks guaranteed vacation per year, maternity leave, paid sick leave and other benefits. And these benefits can’t be taken away if some party that’s hostile to workers get elected.

  • I always found the story of that so fascinating.

The British commander that took Washington wanted to take the city peacefully and entered the city under a flag of peace but some Americans in the city opened fire and wounded his horse and killed some of his soldiers. That made him change his mind and he ordered the burning of all public buildings in the city. And his orders were followed so only public buildings such as the White House, parts of the Capitol, the Department of War were burned. The only government building that survived unscathed was the Patent Office because the guy in charge of it pleaded with the British and they listened to him.

The general also wanted to burn down some newspaper that was printing negative stuff about him but some women convinced him not to do it as the fire would likely spread to their houses. He instead ordered the soldiers to take the newspaper building down brick by brick and then ordered the printing equipment destroyed so they can’t write more about him. I always found that to be hilariously petty.

Also another story I heard was that President Madison was so sure that the British wouldn’t take the city that he had a dinner party prepared for that evening. When the British sappers came to burn down the White House they ate all the food and drunk all the wine prepared before starting to burn the White House down.

After sometime a big storm came and put out the fires and even a tornado landed in the middle of the city. The British decided to get out at that point as the storm caused a lot of damage to the city and casualties to their troops and civilians. As they were pulling out the general asked some woman if this is the kind of weather they get in these God forsaken lands. The woman told him the storm was sent by God to save them from their enemies and the general retorted that the storm actually helped them finish destroying the city.

  • At this point the USA should be considered a Trump family business. He sure is running it like one. There’s rampant nepotism and favoritism, there’s shady financial dealings, there’s schemes to turn public funds into personal funds, there’s false advertising and a whole lot of incompetence. Americans should sure hope it won’t end like all his businesses did.

Oh and one other piece of advice: you can’t get your money back from a dead man and the clock sure is ticking.
