To get creative we’d name Lemmy World, The Lemmy Worlds End, an ever popular name for a pub.

Yeah, I like that frame. I think I’ll incorporate that into how I talk about the fediverse. Might need to polish my examples a bit more though. 😆

I’ve generally found it difficult to communicate why the fediverse, or even the social web is better than these walled gardens run by private companies. I think a lot of people haven’t had a motivating moment to shift. I’s always skeptical of fb, never really liked the set up, so i suppose i hadn’t had the same investment into the account like others.

Although I gave up Youtube also, and I used that a lot more. But that was more a ‘viewing’ account, rather than social media communication. So different reasons driving that I think.

I guess most people are. I am to a degree, but only with family private message chats. That network effect is like cement. So theres not much chance for someone like me to talk about the fediverse on other aocial media. Maybe this experience is common. I think there was a post asking about this the other day that gor pretty high up the ‘All’ feed.

Yeah, i’ve had a similar experience. Even with those friends running their own servers seem to have a lack of awareness. Considering the strength of the Linux and Foss communities here i’m surprised more information hasn’t crossed over into other forums.

Placement of the events page is wonderfully hard. A lot of effort must have been spent making that very unidentifiable.

I guess thats a “wow! How did they do that?” Moment for me.

I think awareness of the Fediverse, or the social web, is much lower than the people involved would assume. I’d think people in tech would have a greater awareness, but maybe thats not even a true assumption.

I don’t know if this is really effective revenge. An understanding of the software isn’t why businesses outsource to a company like Atlassian. Its convenience. If Atlassian’s product is good enough why build your own?

Thats 8000 people with experience running social media that could use their knowledge and wealth to build the Fediverse and competitively reduce Meta’s monopoly.

If even a small group of them realise the agency they have, it could be damaging to Meta, and an acceptable form of growth for the Fediverse as a whole.

I’m assuming anybody that works at Meta still now must be so signed up to their horrible practices, so i don’t expect much from former Meta employees. I’d be happy to be surprised though.

I think you lost me with Cuba. Probably would’ve been better to come back with evidence of the 20-30 years claim, or a cited example of some of the systemic dysfunction of life in the USSR instead of jumping to Cuba, arguably the worst current example to pick.

Unable to attend an event as its too late at night for me where I am. Does anyone know if theres recordings posted anywhere? I’d like to see what people talk about in these more free flowing sessions. Plus a couple of the speakers opening the days look interesting.
