But I liked LMDE…
(Not enough to use it, mind, but it’s not bad. EOS, at the moment.)

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•The handle on one of our basically new kitchen knives MELTED in the dishwasher and fused to the heating element at the bottom.English
3·14 hours agoThey don’t, actually.
The plastic on the handle is a thermoplastic. Every time you send it through the dishwasher, it loosens a bit each time. Eventually the handle will become a danger to use with no way to fix. Before that happens, small gaps form which will harbor bacteria.
Also the water spray causes them to bounce around and dull (or in the case of the OP’s ceramic, chip)
Finally, the harsh deferent used degrades the plastic. This won’t have any issues that’ll crop up before the first two become problematic, but it will cake the plastic to turn whitish
Basically, my parents agree with you and also wonder why my knives actually stay sharp.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Can subject omission work in ENG?English
6·2 days agoIn general, it’s considered less clear.
However context matters a lot, for example, if some one asks what you did today, they’re not going to get confused by “went to the store.” As an answer, they just assume you’re the subject.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If there was a real-life masked vigilante, could he be put on the stand without revealing his identity?English
4·2 days agoIt’s important to note that once in court to testify, they’re going to investigate anyone testifying.
Both the prosecution and the defense. Depending on whose witness they are, one would be investigating to make sure you’re credible and the other to hopefully find something to discredit that.
Further while vigilantism is not necessarily illegal on its own, it’s generally (almost always,) going to involve other crimes.
Vigilantes do not have privileged arrest powers, so at best one is going to have to either work a case (legally,) and then turn things over to cops, or do crime (best the shit/kill the bad guy and pray they got it right.)(they probably haven’t.)
This means that by the time a vigilante takes the stand; they’ve done crimes and even if the entire system lets you … you’re gonna get arrested.
The only way out of that is to get outed and get immunity.
All of that said, if you were a bystander and not necessarily involved, you might be able to testify as your identity and not alter ego. You would have to explain what you were doing there, though.
And you’ll still be investigated… and probably found out.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What did Benjamin Netanyahu mean when he declared that "1 Israeli life is worth 40 American lives"? What are the geopolitical implications of this ratio?English
7·4 days agoYou’re missing the point.
I don’t care what YOU think he is.
It doesn’t matter what I think he is, either.
It does’t really matter what he actually is, if we’re being honest.
The only thing that matters is what HE thinks he is.
Seriously. If you wanna go back far enough, we’re all African. It’s only our own stupid little divisions floating through our heads that separates “us” from “them”, and Netanyahu certainly doesn’t see white people as part of “us”. You’re right about him also excluding others, as well. Doesn’t matter. He doesn’t see Ethiopian Jews as “us” anymore than he does white Americans.
He’s also an asshole, so fuck him all the way to The Hague.

News@lemmy.world•Phone bans are spreading across the US workplaceEnglish
5·4 days ago2 minutes of scrolling articles and quick comments is more refreshing than a 15 minute break relaxing. Because your brain is still “up” but it’s switching to a brand new task which (in a very simplified fashion) is a quick reboot for our brains, it’s just enough to push everything out of working memory so when you pivot back to what you were doing, it’s with a fresh set of eyes.
you realize these idiots in the C-Suite are going to read this and think the solution is to just give people more tasks, right?

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Do you think it’s hard to feel sympathy for some people who get treated like shit and “abused”?English
5·7 days agoSo like.
What the first person is doing is called “harassment”, as well as “stalking”. If you’re being harassed and/or stalked… look for legal help (For example, in the US, you can get the courts to issue a protective order, which, when or if they continue to violate the order can lead to consequences like jail time.)
Someone who continues pushing like this is not safe to be around. at all. You may wish to get a consult from a lawyer before going to the cops, they can go over options.
In any case; no verbally abusing a person who is stalking and harassing you like this is not inappropriate. Sometimes, the abuse is deserved. especially when this is a slowly ramping escalation.
