Georgia's Democratic congressman David Scott has died at age 80. Scott was the first Black chairman of the House Agriculture Committee and was seeking his 13th term in Congress despite challenges from within his party.

    I’m fairly ignorant of the US, so I read this as:

    Republican David Scott, a Georgia Democrat…

    and was slightly confused.

      There’s “congress” which is both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

      When you see “Rep.” it’s short for “representative” and means it’s a House member and not a Senator

        But for some reason, House representatives are usually referred to as “Congressman”.

      You should hear about the Democratic-Republican party that preceded them.

      Or the former Liberal-Conservative party in Canada, or the Progressive Conservative Association of Nova Scotia.
