“The repeal of the digital services tax will significantly advance negotiations on a new economic and security partnership with the United States,” Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said at the time.

No, it did the exact opposite of that. It was the strongest card they had.

I’m sorry but I thought Canadians were intelligent with geography names.

    It’s Washington D.C.

Washington is a state and we are not demanding an ‘entry fee’.

Y’all gonna be calling the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America next because you don’t know your shit?

The entire article looks like Canada is talking to its nearest neighbor Washington when in reality it’s fucking D.C.

“Washington” is a metonym for the federal government of the United States. This is a common and widespread use of the word, nobody thinks the article means the state of Washington.

I was born in Washington and read very confused as a child when I started watching the news. This does cause issues but you are right that it is a common convention.

In cases of national news, it’s commonly assumed to mean Washington D.C. when someone just says “Washington”.

When people talk about the “Washington Consensus” for example, it is just assumed they are not talking about the state.
