The EU doesn’t want to show anything to anyone. It is just treating any third country that has no explicit special arrangements equally, in order to avoid disputes. The UK is, through their own choosing, a third country without any special arrangements regarding border controls now. The cherry on top of this steaming turd: The UK did opt out of Freedom of Movement, explicitly, and specifically. Being a third country to the EU sucks. Always has been.
